How to calculate an aspect ratio.

Divide the width and the height by the largest number that goes into both. For 1920 × 1080 that number is 120, which leaves 16:9. For 1080 × 1350 it is 270, which leaves 4:5.

How do I find the height for a ratio?

Multiply your width by the ratio's height, then divide by the ratio's width. A 1080-pixel-wide image at 4:5 is 1080 × 5 ÷ 4 = 1350 pixels tall. To find a width instead, swap the two: height × ratio width ÷ ratio height.

Should I crop or add background?

Crop when the subject sits near the centre and the edges can go. Add background when cutting would lose the product, a face, or text. Turning a 16:9 landscape video into 9:16 usually means cropping, because the result has to fill a phone screen. Turning a square product photo into 4:5 works either way.

Does a bigger size change the ratio?

No. 1080 × 1920 and 1440 × 2560 are both 9:16. The ratio is the shape; the pixel size is how much detail fits inside it. Upload the largest size the platform recommends, since it will scale down cleanly but not up.

FAQ

Aspect ratio questions.

  • What is the aspect ratio of 1920 × 1080?

16:9. Both numbers divide by 120, which leaves 16 and 9. The same ratio covers 1280 × 720 and 3840 × 2160, so all three are standard landscape video sizes.

  • What size is a 9:16 video?

1080 × 1920 is the standard 9:16 size and what TikTok, YouTube Shorts and Instagram Feed video ask for. Meta recommends the larger 1440 × 2560 for Reels and Stories ads, which is the same 9:16 shape at a higher resolution.

  • What aspect ratio should Instagram and Facebook ads use?

As of August 2026, Meta recommends 4:5 at 1440 × 1800 for feed images and 9:16 for video: 1080 × 1920 for Instagram Feed video and 1440 × 2560 for Reels and Stories. Check the preview in Ads Manager before launch, because Meta updates these specs.

  • Is 1080 × 1350 the same as 4:5?

Yes. 1080 × 1350 simplifies to 4:5, and so does 1440 × 1800. The shape is identical; the larger size just holds more detail.

  • What is 1.91:1 in pixels?

1200 × 628 is the size Google Display and LinkedIn list for 1.91:1 landscape images. It is a rounded size, so the calculator shows it as 300:157, which is within a fraction of a percent of 1.91:1.

  • How do I change an aspect ratio without stretching the image?

Either crop or add background. Cropping cuts the edges so the image fills the new shape; adding background keeps the whole image and fills the empty space around it. The calculator gives you the exact size for both, so you never scale one side on its own, which is what causes stretching.

  • Why are the results rounded to even numbers?

Most video encoders, including H.264, need even widths and heights. An odd size can fail to export or get padded by a pixel. Even numbers work for images too, so the calculator uses them everywhere.
